How do you put the color red in a bedroom without it looking like blood?
I am looking to spice up my master bedroom with red, but don't know how much of it should be red and what other colors should I use to offset it? We have a beige carpet and white baseboards and closet trim and doors. Our bed is iron, our furniture is all fairly dark wood. I like the asian theme idea, but am not stuck to it. Thanks for your help

- a darker red wont look like blood
- ooh.. You should have a four poster bed.. anddd Red and gold material entertwined around the posts.. Sorry i'm not much of a decorator..
- My bedroom is also quite plain but I got an Indian throw for the bed which is sort of silk and patchwork and it has lots of shades of red and different colors in it and makes a big difference to the room. It didnt cost a lot either. Otherwise why not just a few cushions for the bed?
- Hey Lauren! I wanted red in my room, too, and I was worried the red would be too much. I decided I would do the wall in my room with the most contours a cranberry red, and the rest of the walls a rich buttery golden. They set each other off so beautifully, and I can do so much with it! I can go for a really earthy feel, or an exotic arabian feel, or even a little country with floral patters, so you won't feel like you've locked yourself into a specific motif. So, maybe try figuring out an accent wall, then find a subtler but complimentary color to go with it. Good luck!!!
- I just finished painting my daughters room RED. Let me tell you in over 25 yrs. of painting that was the worst color I have ever had to apply. One big problem is she had blue under it on a couple walls, those walls took 5 coats. The walls that werent blue took I think 1 primer coat and 2 coats of paint. If you use red use a primer underneath it. It will help much. You could possibly paint about a third of the way up and run a border to divide the colors if you dont want the whole wall red. Yes red does look like blood now that you mention it.
- Just use a color that isn't blood red. Rusty or brick red is nice. Burgundy can be beautiful and won't look at all like blood. Use it on just one or maybe two walls and put a rich gold color on the bed. Jewel tones are gorgeous, especially in a bedroom. However if you do this I would recommend painting your white trim a darker color. I would go with black to minimize contrast. Remember that it isn't dark colors that make a room seem small, it's contrast.
- MIX IT WITH ORANGE.
- "Lipstick" or "Firecracker" by Behr are two nice reds that would look good on just one wall in your room..perhaps the one behind your bed. Add some punches of red with flowers, candles, and pillows. The rest of your color scheme will work with this. Paint the other three walls a sandy beige to match your carpet.
- I painted one wall of my bedroom a dark red color called "roasted pepper" by Behr, and then the rest of the room is painted a dark mauve called "ponder." It turned out really well. http://www.behr.com/behrx/workbook/ Here are some photos of actual rooms done with red: http://www.roomvues.com/publicPicture.php?PictureId=202&target=/picturePublicList.php&CategoryId=&PPage=1 http://www.roomvues.com/publicPicture.php?PictureId=108&target=/picturePublicList.php&CategoryId=&PPage=5 http://www.roomvues.com/publicPicture.php?PictureId=93&target=/picturePublicList.php&CategoryId=&PPage=6 http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_bedroom/article/0,1793,HGTV_3366_5862682_02,00.html http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/decorating/article/0,1793,HGTV_3545_1729425,00.html
