What is a wall color to compliment oriental black furniture?
I have always hated these questions, but here I am! This question is right up there with How do you like my avatar!" The windows face East and South. The walls are currently a deep emerald green with beige carpet. It looks like a tomb in there! The master bath was the same color, as was the utility area just off the bath. I just painted those rooms a very light beige. Not exciting, but a LOT lighter and brighter! I really love light light aqua, but I am afraid to put it with all that black furniture and beige carpet. The furniture is really beautiful. I sure don't want to make it look cheap. The master bedroom is just off the kitchen - which is lipstick red. Everytime I try to think of a color, I start thinking of aqua and then I just go brain dead, and we are going to go to the paint store tomorrow!

- Olive Green or a lighter shade of green
- I think red is a traditional Asian color. You could maybe paint one of the walls red....like the lipstick red in your bedroom, Aqua would be pretty. hmmmm, how about a lighter green than you had before...like a bamboo green on one or all of the walls?
- I was going to say deep red, or a golden color, something sharp to compliment the black. Aqua would not be a bad idea, but not a 1970's aqua something a little darker and more crisp. Or how about that new color thats like a burnt orange? I have oriental styling in my bedroom and the walls are deep red with gold trim, but the gold is in high gloss paint.
- My friend has black antique furniture. She hired a decorator. She painted the living area Light Copper, a Laura Ashley paint. It's beautiful . The other wall colors were a pale yellow and pale blue. It all came together very nicely. Her floors are hardwood , so she didn't have the carpet worry.
- Red...is nice.
- I would use red, shades of gold or white. The orientals are very simplistic in design and especially in a living area. You want people to see the furniture not the walls. I have never really seen an aqua on a wall that I really like. You could even do just one or two walls in color and the rest white. Red or gold, especially if the furniture is black will only make the furniture look richer. Gold or white will brighten the room. I would suggest not making the entire room in color, if you leave the ceiling white it will make the ceiling appear to be higher and give you a nice sense of space. You might even want to stop on your way to the paint store and look at or pick up a book on household feng shui. That would really help you out I'm sure. Good luck.
- How about a pale jade green or a pale silvery sage green. Jade green is a traditional asian color and a pale version would be very striking with black furniture. I would also be a lot brighter than deep emerald green. Good luck!
- Since I don’t have a lot of info or can see the space, I ‘ll give you a general opinion. The Black and Red modern furniture are in strong colors and shapes. My first inclination would be to set those pieces off against a neutral but rich wall color. Something like, Behr Paint color, Classic Taupe. You could bring the red and black in by framing artwork in black frames and thick large red mats. Just some ideas. Good luck!
- Would you consider using wallcovering as a focal wall, maybe 2 shades of gold muted stripes, and use the lighter gold on the other walls. The black furniture would be striking against gold walls, if done right.
- I think aqua would look very striking with the black furniture. But if you're still not sure, take a look at some of these HGTV makeovers.
