How much will it cost for a professional moving company to move us about 10 miles within the same city?
We will pack ourselves. We have living room, master bedroom, den, and kitchen furniture plus the contents of a garage.

- Most of them will give you quotes for free - but I moved less than ten miles and did all the packing myself and didn't even have a stove or frig to move and they charged me $400.00. They did give me 20 free big boxes to pack in for free when I gave my deposit. ($100 an hour and $150 for every hour over 4 hrs was the going rate at most reputible places) They moved me in just under 4 hrs. I tipped them $100.00 on top of that (in total to be split by all 3 men)
- They will provide free quotes. I'd suggest just renting a Ryder or Budget rental truck.
- Your going to have to call and shop around for the best price, however, I can tell you that the average is probably going to be around $100 an hour for a weekday, and $125 an hour if you hire them on a Saturday. Most moving companies also will charge you a four hour minimum but it sounds like you may be an all day move. Also factor in the tip. I moved a few years ago and I had a morning move that two guys did in about 3 hours, I tipped them $25 each.
- Rates very greatly depending on the city. Just telling us what rooms you have doesn't tell us what is in them and a professional service will want a detailed list before they give you a price. We have had customers in one bedroom apartments with a piano, big screen and huge furniture that got charged more than someone in a house that was furnished will all light Ikea furniture. The best way to find out is to call a few. Another option is to rent a U-Haul and then use a service like iselfmove.com to provide professionals who will load and unload it for you.
